Stop Motion Animation

Transformation and Surprise

Continuing from last week's video assignment, I placed myself in front of the camera. The story is of a woman who finds beauty in the unexpected. It is about confidence and radical acceptance of oneself, going with the ebbs and flows of life as they come our way. Not only is she surprised to find herself decorated with flowers, but she fully embraces this metamorphosis-like transformation of herself, both inside and out.

The process of this stop motion animation went by very smoothly once I had actually set up my camera and taken the sequence of photographs that I imagined I needed. The most difficult part of this process as a whole was the brainstorming phase. As someone who has never done stop motion animation before this, I had no idea what the capabilities of this medium were, and I anticipated a few difficulties going into it. For one, I had to decide to use my body and performance to convey my story as I had known that my camera setup would not allow itself to position the camera in such a way that I could photograph drawings, fabric, clay, or any other traditional media in a consistent manner. Thus, my perceive range of possibilities for my story shrunk down greatly. I enjoyed seeing the animation come to life in the camera before I even finished taking my frames and uploading them, as I scrolled through the images and saw how they intertwined with one another. the medium itself also allowed for me to utilize a much more whimsical approach to telling the story that I wanted to share, as it is so simple to integrate "magic" through the act of making an object appear as if out of thin air.

I most definitely would like to further explore this medium, and upgrade my setup in such a way that I will be able to photograph different materials and subject matter other than myself.

  1. Cheyenne, love this stop motion. After you showed it in class it actually inspired the lesson plan I went on to write for stop motion. High schoolers would love this. I love the idea of reclaiming the selfie to be something more involved and creative. Great job on the seamless transitions!

  2. Hi Cheyenne, I love the narrative you explored in your stop motion animation. The frames in which the character finds herself decorated with flowers are really interesting, and they show a process of self-exploration and self-acceptance. You inspired me to try using our bodies and performance in stop motion next time!
